Cell-to-pack — packaging without modules

Cell-to-pack construction places battery cells directly into the pack housing, eliminating the module stage that traditionally sat between them.

The module was a convenience of manufacturing rather than a requirement of physics. Grouping cells into serviceable blocks made assembly and warranty repair easier, at the cost of the housings, fasteners and wiring each block needed. Cell-to-pack designs delete those and use the pack case itself to hold, cool and protect the cells.

Why it matters when buying

The gain is packaging efficiency, expressed as the share of pack volume actually occupied by cells. A higher share means either more range in the same floor or the same range in a thinner floor, which shows up as headroom rather than as a spec-sheet number. This is the main reason Chinese manufacturers reached competitive range with a cheaper chemistry.

The loss is granularity of repair. Where a module could be replaced, a cell-to-pack failure is more often handled at pack level, and independent workshops are less likely to be equipped for it. Service network coverage therefore matters more for these cars than for earlier designs, and coverage is uneven between European markets.
