Plug and Charge — authentication without an app
Plug and Charge is a standard under which the car identifies and authorises itself to the charger over the cable, removing the need for a card or an app.
The car carries a certificate, the charger checks it, the session starts and the billing goes to a contract already attached to the vehicle. The standard behind it is part of the communication protocol that governs European fast charging.
Why it matters when buying
It is a convenience feature until the moment an app fails at a charger in the rain, at which point it becomes the difference between continuing a journey and not. Reliability of payment is consistently one of the worst-rated aspects of European charging, and this bypasses most of it.
Support has to exist on both sides. A capable car needs a network that implements the standard, and coverage varies widely between countries and between operators inside one country. For newer Chinese models the feature has often arrived after launch through a software update, so the build date matters more than the model name — and whether the local importer has enabled it is a separate question again.
