WVTA — European whole vehicle type approval
Whole vehicle type approval is the European process by which a model is certified once for the entire Union and can then be registered in any member state without further national testing.
An approval authority in one member state examines the type against Union requirements and issues an approval. Every car built to that type then carries a certificate of conformity, and any registration office in the Union must accept it. This is the mechanism that turns twenty-seven national markets into one.
Why it matters when buying
For a Chinese manufacturer this is the true cost of entering Europe, and it is why cars appear here years after their domestic launch, sometimes with different lighting, different assistance calibration and different battery options. What arrives is a European type, not the Chinese car with a translated manual.
For a buyer the approval is invisible when it exists and painful when it does not. A car without European approval cannot be registered on the strength of its Chinese paperwork; it needs individual approval, which means engineering assessment, modification and cost, applied per vehicle and per country. That is the fault line running under every discussion of importing a car privately.
The approval is also what determines whether recalls, software campaigns and warranty obligations have an addressable holder in Europe. A car with no European type approval has, in practice, nobody in Europe who owes you anything.
