Aiways — one of the first Chinese EV start-ups into Europe, and what that history means now

Brand at a glance

1models in the global registry

Aiways is an independent Chinese start-up, not a spin-off of an established manufacturer, and it reached European roads earlier than almost every other brand covered here — among the first wave of Chinese EV entrants, well ahead of the manufacturers now more commonly discussed. It built its early European presence partly through direct sales and subscription arrangements rather than a conventional franchised dealer network, an approach several later entrants have since experimented with in their own ways.

Being early is not the same as being established

A start-up manufacturer without a legacy parent group carries a different risk profile from a state-backed or venture-scale entrant: no existing joint-venture manufacturing base to fall back on, and no sibling brand to absorb the business if the passenger-car venture struggles. Being an early mover in Europe gave Aiways name recognition ahead of many rivals, but recognition and long-term financial and distribution stability are separate questions, and a buyer should treat them as such rather than assuming one implies the other.

What this means when buying

For a brand with this history, the single most important thing to verify before anything else is current: whether the official importer relationship in a given country is still active, how its network and service capacity compare today to what existed at launch, and what would happen to warranty and parts supply if that changed. None of these questions are unique to Aiways, but they carry more weight for an early, independent entrant than for a brand backed by a larger group with other businesses to draw on.
