Changan — one of China's oldest manufacturers, arriving through its EV brands
Changan is a state-owned manufacturer with roots older than the car industry itself — the group traces its origins to a nineteenth-century arsenal, and it has been building vehicles since the middle of the twentieth century, making it one of the longest-established names in Chinese manufacturing. Inside China it is known as much for its joint ventures with Ford and Mazda as for its own-brand vehicles, a position closer to a European legacy manufacturer than to the newer, venture-funded electric brands this registry mostly covers.
Two brands, two different bets on electric
Changan’s European push runs almost entirely through two newer sub-brands rather than its own name. Avatr is a premium electric line built jointly with battery maker CATL and telecoms group Huawei, positioned to compete with established premium electric SUVs on technology credentials rather than price. Deepal sits below it, aimed at the mainstream electric SUV segment where most of the volume in this registry actually is.
The split mirrors a pattern this registry has seen from other Chinese groups: a legacy manufacturer with domestic scale and joint-venture experience, launching new-generation electric sub-brands to enter Europe rather than exporting under a name with decades of unrelated associations attached to it.
What this means when buying
Because both European-facing brands are relatively new even by the standards of this registry, the questions worth asking are the ones that apply to any young brand rather than anything specific to Changan’s domestic history: how established the official importer is in a given country, how deep the service network actually runs outside major cities, and how the battery warranty terms compare to the premium or mainstream rivals each sub-brand is pricing itself against.
The Changan name itself rarely appears on a European price list or showroom sign, which is worth knowing before assuming a search for it will turn up much locally — the useful search terms are the sub-brand names.
